Why Is The Legislation Necessary ?

We have all become aware of climate change to one extent or another. The issue is not all things affect the environment the same, some have greater risk to our planet than others. Changing crips packets is important, but it's not going to slow things down as much as tackling food waste does.
As a whole, food waste creates more greenhouse gas emissions than any other individual country in the world, except for the USA and China.
​That's a lot of emissions.

The Legislation.

The Houses of Parliament voted and passed legislation that will affect England and Wales called The Environmental Act 2021.
The changes will bring around change and affect how we recycle our waste. The Legislation will now mean that household premises and non-household premises (businesses, schools and hospitals), will be under strict guidance on how to deal with non-residual waste, that has value to the environment.

The government intends to drive up recycling rates and eliminate biodegradable waste from landfills, this is because food waste can be reprocessed to create an organic fertiliser for farmers to use and produce biogas which can generate electricity. This will bolster the UK's energy security.

What this means for Schools ?

​​Under the new regulations, your premises will have to be carrying out these 3 things to justly require the service. 
​

• Have 10 or more Full Time Employees - not just the premises itself, it even includes head office staff.
• Have food that is intended for human consumption.
• Includes all food from processing or preparation of food, individual food parts such as meat, bones. egg shells, fruit and veg skins, tea bags, coffee grounds.​​

The timeline for beginning food waste collection is March 2025.
Schools must arrange for the separation and collection of food waste from; Leftovers at the end of lunch time, breakfast and after-school clubs, any remainders on plates, and food leftovers created by staff. 

The timeline for schools is only 7 months away.
